What Should I Do if Stopped for DUI/Drunk Driving?
If you are stopped by the police and suspected of driving while intoxicated, you will be asked to take a chemical test, such as a blood test or a Breathalyzer test, to determine your blood alcohol level. In Connecticut, if you refuse to submit to the test as requested by the police officer, you may be prosecuted for drunk driving and your license may be suspended for a period of six months.
Do not make any incriminating statements to the police (do not talk about any drinks you had) when you are suspected of drunk driving. Always act in a courteous and respectful manner with the investigating police officer. The police officer's testimony could have a direct bearing on your sentencing in a drunk driving case at a later time.
A lawyer from Mark M. Kratter, LLC can build a strong DWI/DUI defense on your behalf. We handle criminal hearings as well as DMV administrative hearings involving driver's license suspension.
What Are the Penalties for Drinking and Driving?
Drunk driving is a serious offense in Connecticut. A convicted first-time DUI offender is ordered to pay a fine of at least $500 and may be sentenced to a short jail term of a minimum of two days or 100 hours of community service in lieu of jail time. Suspension of his or her driver's license will usually occur as well. There are certain "programs" available to first-time offenders, which allow the defendant's punishment to be decreased under certain circumstances. Our firm also handles serious felony DWI/DUI offenses and DUI cases involving commercial driver's licenses.
As your legal counsel our DUI lawyers will not only defend you against charges, but will help you develop a plan to avoid future legal problems.
In addition to DUI, our attorneys provide criminal defense against a range of charges. For more information about Connecticut's criminal trial process, see our page on the criminal law process.
